storytelling

Must be a sacrifice to get reward at end of story

What is the internal sacrifice that (Steve, Cindy, Bob) gave up in the lake story?

Never fully close a story. What happened to Cindy, Bob, Steve over the course of time?

What feeling do I want my listener to have at the end of the story?

How would I describe the lake (personification)

What did Cindy's voice sound like? Comforting, confident, etc. How else would I describe her character without overdoing it?

All stories are about heroes (Steve and Cindy)

All heroes have flaws and they are heroes because of their flaws

Hero's have to have passions - a wound they are trying to overcome.

Hero's are full of fears. Fears of past trauma. Governing fear in the story. They must confront their fear.

Undercut yourself in the story. Show your flaws.

Hero's have magnets. People gravitate to heroes and others who are repelled by the heroes.

What caused you this fear? Can you identify the time, place, and experience? ie. Tom Siegal at KSig. How did I process it at the time? Lack of worth. Don't feel worthy. Nature of obsession as it relates to fears.

Inside a great story, you have to see the hero taking risks and dealing with internal conflicts.

Hero's have masks covering their vulnerability.

The hero is reflecting me, the creator. Must relate and resonate with the audience.

The big Why for the hero is fixing themselves ... they either succeed or fail, but they tried. Guts to stand up to it. Vulnerability makes a hero a hero. Show the capacity to act.

  1. An unmet need that creates a deep longing or sense of urgency: Inner motivation
This is the wounding event, the deep dark secret, this is the bloody monster hiding in the psyche that won't go away.
  1. A tangible goal that represents the fulfillment of this need: External motivation
  2. People or forces that oppose the hero's quest: Outer Conflict
  3. Fears, flaws, and misbeliefs that block personal growth and the Hero's self-worth: Inner conflict
In one sentence, what is this story about?
Is it about a little brother who saved his big brother
Is it about a little girl who risked her life for strangers
Is it about bullies who put people at risk of dying?
Is it about a boy who had a near-death experience?

Construct the world around the hero
When are we in time?
Where are we? Weather? geography?
What do you sense? Feel, smell, sights, sounds
Talk about the culture, social structure, politics, pleasure, customers, beliefs, strife, laws, rules
What's happened up until now that describes why we are here now?
Your world needs a mystery. Don't divulge everything.
What motivates your hero
Maslow's hierarchies of needs

Voice perspective: Outer voice what we say, filtered, speech, actions, mask
... and INNER VOICE - what we really think and feel, unfiltered: little voice nagging away at you. your wound that plays out in the story. vulnerability
Each voice has its own tone, accent, rate, etc.

Scene perspective: up close and far away. Did I provide a grand overview first? Opening scene in Beetlejuice. 30,000 feet to Zero.  Burning match to the burning sun. Setting:Scene:Plot

The Devil is in the detail: description of the sword, mustache on Stalin
Can you show details about your characters?

When should you use action and when should you use speech?
What is the background of the character?
